interactivity 3: closing the cirCLE
Advantages, Disadvantages and Future Potential
In order to close the learning circle, we invite you to reflect on the following, and post your thoughts in the ETEC 522 Blog under 'Reflections'.
1. As you have probably realized by now, an OLE, to be considered as such, should provide the tools, resources, scaffolds and enabling context to promote heuristic based learning. It may be a ready-made LMS, Virtual World, or a system you yourself out together. It is ‘open’ because of the learning theory it adheres to, but it need not be free. However, an OLE is not the sum of its parts alone, but rather how it is used. As a teacher or student, have you come across situations where an OLE has or has not been used to its full potential?
2. Hannafin et al (1999, p. 139) argue that there are too many resources out there, and given the growth in both technology and information, this trend will continue. They ask, "How can we not only make existing resources more available to support learning, but accommodate future developments in each? It seems unlikely that we will be able to maintain pace using resource-embedded designs."
3. In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of OLEs and what is their future potential?
